Nancy Romfh Schlichting, playing #1 for Team Eagle, was born and raised in Miami, Florida. The daughter of a six-goal polo player, Nancy rode horses her whole life but didn't play polo until she joined the intercollegiate team at the University of Virginia in 1981. After graduation, Nancy continued to play polo at Gulfstream Polo Club in Lake Worth, Florida. She took a hiatus from the sport while attending law school and picked it back up after making partner, achieving a one goal rating along the way. In 2003, Nancy moved to Arvonia, Virginia with her husband, John, who is a cattle rancher and lives there with their three daughters. Nancy practices corporate litigation law at Lenhart Obenshain in Charlottesville. She is currently rated as an A player.
Rob Rinehart, playing #2 for Team Eagle, grew up in Charlottesville where he began playing polo at the age of fifteen. He played intercollegiate polo while attending the University of Virginia and worked in Texas as a trainer and player before moving back to Charlottesville. He continues to play polo as a hobby while working as manager of Augusta Block. Rob lives in Ivy with his wife and three children and is a member of both the Charlottesville and Roseland Polo Clubs. He is rated 3 goals.
David King, playing #3 for Team Eagle, grew up in Texas and started playing polo while a law student in Houston. In 1995, David, his wife, Ellen, and their three sons moved to Crozet where they founded King Family Vineyards. After taking several years off from playing, David came back to the sport with great enthusiasm, building a polo field on his family farm in 2005 and starting the Roseland Polo Club. David is rated 3 goals.
Wendy Kirschnick, playing #4 for Team Eagle, grew up in Vermont on her parents' small horse farm. Her mother's passion for horses was passed to Wendy early on as she learned to foxhunt, jump and show. Later, her father took up the game of polo, and Wendy followed in his footsteps. Wendy moved to Charlottesville in 1986 to pursue a career as trainer/rider of show hunters. She continued to play polo during her show career and has won many tournaments including the Women's Arena Open. She has been a prominent figure in the show world until recently when she decided to switch to the polo world full-time. She now works for the Dameron family at Upper Shirley in Charles City, Va. Wendy has been the polo shot-demonstrator for the past two Pink Ribbon Polo Cups and was our honorary chairperson, along with her mother, Kay, for our 2006 event. Wendy is a breast cancer survivor and is excited to be able to play in this year's match. She is also thrilled to have a full head of hair this year!
Isabella Wolf, playing #1 for the Embarq team, is a 16 year rising Junior who lives in Middleburg and attends The Highland School. She has been playing polo since the age of 9, and has been riding since she was 18 months old. Her horse experiences include fox hunting, eventing, show jumping, and hunters. Currently, Isabella competes in eventing and plays polo. Isabella has participated in games and tournaments in South Carolina, New York, and Virginia. She is always committed and eager to play polo as well as manage and care for her polo ponies. She hopes to someday make a career of polo and horse care. Isabella is currently an A rated player.
Hector Rincon, playing #2 for Team Embarq, is the owner of Guapos Restaurants, a family owned and operated Tex Mex style restaurant with eight locations in VA, MD, and DC. The Rincons have been serving great food and margaritas for over 16 years. Born and raised in Colombia, South America, Hector learned riding skills from his uncle, Eduardo Rincon. He began playing polo in 2005 at German Noguera's polo school and has continued on with Mr. Noguera, joining in league tournaments. This summer Hector will be playing at the newly formed Virginia International Polo Club in Upperville, VA. Hector has played many sports and claims that "polo is the toughest and best of all" and that "spectators watching do not realize how fit the player must be". Hector has only been playing polo for two years and claims that "it is the most challenging activity he has tried and invites all to try because he guarantees you will have such a great time". Hector is currently a B rated player.
Martin Zegers, playing #3 for Team Embarq, began playing polo at the age of ten in his native Chile with other kids. By the age of fourteen he was playing with his father in 14- goal tournaments. After studying agricultural engineering at the Catholic university in Chile, Martin came to the United States to play polo in Virginia. Last year Martin also played in Aiken, SC, Santa Barbara, CA and Palm Beach, FL where he was on the winning team of the 2007 22- Goal CV Whitney Cup. Along with his professional polo career, Martin has a breeding program for polo horses at his farm in Chile. He currently is rated at 6 goals.
Maureen Brennan, playing #4 for Team Embarq, grew up on Long Island and now operates the Virginia International Polo Club and the Goose Creek Polo Team, a breeding and training organization in Upperville, VA. Maureen, rated at 0 goals, came to play polo six seasons ago after switching from a career as a financial analyst and amateur grand prix show jumper. After moving to Virginia in 2000 to expand her show jumper breeding program, she was introduced to polo. By 2002, all show jumpers were sold and her string of polo ponies began to grow. The Goose Creek Polo Team has had the pleasure of playing with or against some of the world's best players and has had many successes. Goose Creek Polo has also been successfully breeding and training polo ponies for several years. This summer Maureen will be playing with Martin Zegers at the Virginia International Polo Club and during September in Aiken, SC in the 22 goal Aiken Cup and the 20 goal Silver Cup.
